Church
Alpine, Bergen County

This interesting stone building owes something to Richard Upjohn's
designs for Episcopal churches executed 30 years earlier—the
simple bellcote, the south entrance, and the use of uncoursed stonewalls.
It was designed
by J. Cleveland Cady in 1871, and I understand this was his first church
project. Cady would go on to design many churches throughout the east
coast,
including Presbyterian churches in Morristown, Madison and Paterson,
as well as the railroad station in Demarest. And the old Metropolitan
Opera House and a portion of the American Museum of Natural History
in New York City.
