Saint Mary's Church (original)
Burlington, Burlington County
This is the oldest church in the state, built in 1702-3. It has recently
been restored, although not to its original condition, as it had undergone
substantial enlargement in 1834 and over the years. Burlington was the
original capital of West Jersey, so when the Proprietors surrendered
both the East and West colonies to the King, it was important for the
Church of England to have a seat in both Perth Amboy and Burlington.
This fine Georgian structure is separated from the new Saint Mary's
by a large burial ground, which is equally fascinating.
