St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church
Elizabeth, Union County

Organized in 1845, the substantial building was erected on Washington
Street in 1851, making it the oldest Roman Catholic church in the
city.
Prior to that time, there were no Catholic services except
for an occasional mass celebrated by a visiting priest from Staten
Island.
Construction was started in 1845 on the basement of
this building, but it was not completed until 1862. It is
typical of Catholic churches in that the length of the nave (133 ft) is about
twice
its
width (66 ft).
