Hedding Methodist Episcopal Church
Jersey City, Hudson County

Organized
and built in 1855, the church is located on Montgomery between Grove
and Barrow. In 1895 is was home to the largest Methodist congregation
in the city; it is now home to a Seventh Day Adventist congregation.
The building is
interesting
for
the
way it
adapts
architectural
elements
to a urban environment. The "arcade" beneath
the roofline is a very common feature, almost as common as the Gothic
windows after the Civil War. Nevertheless, the style of the building
certainly does not fit neatly into any of the common classifications.
