First Baptist Church
Montclair, Essex County
Although
this is now a Masonic Lodge, in 1889 it was erected as the First Baptist
Church, a congregation that was organized in 1885. It has many of the
elements of the late-nineteenth century Romanesque style—rusticated stone,
an overlarge arch as an opening for the entry, massed windows, and some carving
in the door and window surrounds. The architect was Joseph Ireland.
