First Presbyterian Church
Woodbridge, Middlesex County

In 1667, Puritans from Newbury, Massachusetts purchased land
in Woodbridge; they were granted a charter in 1669, and laid out the
town. By 1675 or so, they had erected their first meetinghouse. Their
charter stipulated that they could elect a town government and might
call a minister, who would be supported by local taxes. By 1803 they
had moved from a Congregational form of church organization to
an affiliation with the Presbyterian church, and they had outgrown
their
earlier buildings and built a new church, much like the Presbyterian
church in Springfield. That served until 1971 when the congregation
decided to restore the building. Obviously, in doing so, they changed
the character completely.
